We Continue to Grow Our Partnership with FRC

We believe investing in youth has many rewards. Continuing the company's legacy of community giving, we are very pleased to support the 2024 FIRST Robotics Canada (FIRST) that provides high school students with opportunities to learn new skills that prepare them for the future.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) inspire students, teachers and mentors to work together to build a robot to face off against other robots. FIRST not only promotes student development in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. They also learn important values like safety, teamwork and collaboration, and something FIRST call "gracious professionalism". It's a term that promotes win/win relationships in a way that demonstrates integrity, respect and valuing others, individuals and teams. As FIRST says, "it's not about the Robot.

Our partnership with FIRST is a fulfilling one for the company and employees who donate time mentoring students and judging the competitions. We take pride in knowing we help encourage young people to pursue further studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Many of these participants have aspirations for careers based on these disciplines.

Our 2024 sponsored teams include:

Mustangs - #4903 – Vincent Massey Secondary School in Windsor, ON

Villanova WiredCats - #5885 - Villanova Secondary School in LaSalle, ON

Belle River Boltheads - #4920 - Belle River Secondary School in Belle River, ON

ICanRide

iCan Ride

ONYX Engineering is proud to support initiatives which help special interests.  One of these interests is the 'iCan Ride' program. Kind Minds is hosting the iCan Ride Camp which provides specialized equipment to help individuals with special needs, 8 years or older, learn to ride a bike independently.

We understand that the vast majority of people with disabilities never experience the thrill of independently riding a two-wheel bicycle during their lifetime. For example, recent research shows that over 80% of people with Autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle.  Defying these odds is why we exist!

The original iCan Bike program resulted from more than twenty years of research by Dr. Richard E. Klein, a mechanical engineering professor, and his students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Klein retired from his academic career at the University of Illinois in 1998 and held the first bike camp in 1999 in La Crosse, WI.

Kind Minds pay a fixed fee to conduct these 5-day camps which consist of five 75-minute bike-riding sessions per day with a range of four to eight riders per session. ONYX Engineering was pleased to be a long supporting sponsor and provide a helmet free of charge to each participant.
