Robot Guided Vision System

ONYX has been implementing machine vision inspection systems since 1999. Our systems have migrated from initially monitoring and sampling product quality to capitalizing on the many advanced features available to vision today.

Our philosophy is to minimize the number of false readings thereby increasing confidence in the technology. We are commonly using vision in manufacturing environments where there was traditionally either marginal or no available means to accurately detect details for a better manufacturing process.

We also utilize machine vision for robot guided inspection and vision guided robotics for location of parts.

We have successfully installed and commissioned over 200 machine vision cameras and are still going!

The following are some examples of what we have done in machine vision:

  • Provided programming for an overhead console inspection system which checks component and button placement using various tests including OCR (optical character recognition). It displays results on an HMI indicating which location is incorrect.
  • Throttle Body ImageProvided a custom application employing multiple cameras to both inspect a number of machined surfaces for scores and scratches as well as display the images on a single screen for final buyoff by the inspector. Normal parts would display as images with green outlines. Abnormal parts are displayed with a red outline around the segment of the part, which is suspect. It uses Ethernet communications and discrete interlocks to integrate PLC, computer, and cameras to plant-floor computers.
  • ONYX has also developed inline fully automated test stations. One application includes a single camera that inspects water jacket holes on an aluminum head.  If one of the holes does not match a predetermined shape, it is automatically tracked down the line to a station that extracts the head with an overhead, two-axis machine. The entire system was designed, supplied, and commissioned by ONYX.
  • Provided a vision system that inspected for both the correct type of throttle body and correct assembly of bolts and studs on the engine. It utilized RF tag technology to identify the desired type of throttle body required. It then inspected for a number of different items, then wrote the appropriate acceptance or reject data to the RF tag for repair in a repair bay down the line. The entire RF system on which the engine build is based was designed and  conceived by ONYX Engineering Ltd.
  • Provided an end of line robot guided vision build validation system checking for wiring inside clips, correct part complexity, application of grease, alignment validation.
  • Provided a robot guided RTV bead application inspection system which checks for bead width, application of the bead on the correct surface, continuity of bead.
